Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause serious illness in infants, children, and adults. The Duplin County Health Department is committed to educating the public, preventing the spread of infection, and providing access to vaccinations.

What Is Pertussis?

Pertussis is caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium. It spreads easily through coughing and sneezing and can be especially dangerous for babies and those with weakened immune systems.

Common Symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Mild fever
  • Cough that becomes severe and fits in spells
  • "Whooping" sound during gasping for air after coughing
  • Vomiting after coughing fits
  • Exhaustion after coughing episodes

Symptoms may appear 5–10 days after exposure, but sometimes take up to 3 weeks to develop.

Why It’s Serious

  • Infants under 1 year are at the highest risk for severe complications including pneumonia, seizures, and even death.
  • Even vaccinated individuals can get pertussis, but symptoms are usually milder.

Vaccination Is the Best Protection

The DTaP vaccine protects infants and young children, while the Tdap booster is recommended for:

  • Preteens (11–12 years old)
  • Pregnant women (during each pregnancy)
  • Adults who haven't had a Tdap shot
  • Caregivers of infants and healthcare workers

Vaccines are available at the Duplin County Health Department. Walk-ins welcome for Vaccines

Prevent the Spread

  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands often
  • Stay home if you or your child are sick
  • Ensure vaccinations are up to date

What to Do If You Think You Have Pertussis

If you or your child has a persistent cough, especially with vomiting or a whooping sound:

  • Seek medical care
  • Isolate to prevent spreading the illness
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions, including antibiotics if prescribed
