What Is the Flu?
Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads easily from person to person, especially during fall and winter months. It can cause mild to severe symptoms and is different from a common cold or stomach virus.
Common Flu Symptoms Include:

- Cough and sore throat
- Body aches and fatigue
- Headache
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children)
Protect Yourself with a Flu Shot
The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the flu and reduce its severity. The Duplin County Health Department offers seasonal flu shots to individuals of all ages.
Flu vaccines are recommended annually for everyone 6 months and older—especially:
- Pregnant individuals
- Children under 5
- Adults 65+
- People with chronic health conditions
- Healthcare and essential workers
