Rabies & Animal Bites

Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease that affects the brain and spinal cord of mammals, including humans. The Duplin County Health Department works closely with local agencies to respond to animal bites, investigate potential rabies exposures, and protect our community through education and prevention.

 What Is Rabies?

Rabies is caused by a virus that is most often spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Without treatment, rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Prompt medical care is critical.

 Animals That Can Carry Rabies:

  • Wild animals: raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats
  • Domestic pets: dogs, cats, and ferrets (especially if unvaccinated)
  • Livestock and other mammals can also be infected

If You’ve Been Bitten or Scratched:

  • Wash the wound immediately with soap and water.
  • Seek medical attention right away.
  • Report the incident to Duplin County Animal Control and the Health Department.

Rabies Prevention

The best way to protect yourself and your pets is through vaccination and responsible animal handling:

  • Vaccinate your pets and keep vaccinations up to date
  • Avoid contact with wild or stray animals
  • Keep pets indoors or supervised outdoors
  • Secure trash and pet food to avoid attracting wildlife
  • Teach children to never touch unfamiliar animals

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

If you’ve been exposed to rabies, you may need a series of life-saving rabies shots to prevent the disease from developing. The Health Department can help assess your exposure and guide you through treatment options.
